A New Perspective on Deborah – A Prophetess in the Bible

The Bible is filled with stories of ordinary people doing extraordinary things. Many of the better known figures have had movies made about them. But there are other significant people in the Bible that aren’t brought to the big screen. That’s why I have been attracted to historical novels.

The Bible is also applicable to life today. It doesn’t matter which of the 66 books in the Bible  you read, God’s word is still relevant. That the word is God breathed and meant for all generations. .

Recently, I have begun to read books by Jill Eileen Smith who really does a fine job of researching the time periods of her characters which are women in the Bible. Little is written about Deborah who was a judge in the Bible. Jill is a gifted storyteller and her novel The Prophetess: Deborah’s Story brings this Old Testament character to life. Deborah lived in a dark time and lead the people against their cruel enemies.

I would also like to suggest that this story may be applicable to life. Christians are also called to turn to God instead of the idols of the world. Idols can be anything from sports, your children, worldly goods like cars or homes, or anything you treasure more than God. Though Deborah’s people struggled through different times, you will be inspired by their story of faith. Our world today is full of ruthless terrorists such as in her story.

Jill Eileen Smith has written many other great books about women in the Old Testament. Each story is researched and brings the reader right into the time period. They help to bring new understanding to the books in the Bible. You will find compassion for her characters and a deeper understanding of the part they played in the Bible.  The courage and faith of her characters will encourage you. I highly recommend her books.
